On Tuesday, June 2, 2026, actor and musician Idris Elba was officially knighted by King Charles III in an investiture ceremony held at Windsor Castle . The 53-year-old received the prestigious honour for his extensive services to young people, particularly through his charitable work with the Elba Hope Foundation and his role as a Goodwill Ambassador for The King’s Trust . Looking sharp in a long black suit jacket, Elba knelt before the monarch as King Charles used a sword to bestow the knighthood, a moment captured and shared by the Royal Family on social media . He was accompanied by his wife, Sabrina, who co-founded the foundation with him in 2022, and he later expressed his gratitude, stating simply, “We are thankful. The work continues” .

Elba is far from the only Black person to have received such an honour from King Charles. The monarch has knighted several notable Black figures across various fields. In June 2025, King Charles awarded a knighthood to 90-year-old rugby league legend Billy Boston, making him the first knight in the sport’s 130-year history for his achievements and for overcoming racial prejudice as a pioneer for Black athletes . Additionally, in 2024, King Charles appointed Professor Sir Geoff Palmer, Scotland’s first Black professor and a renowned human rights campaigner, as a Knight of the Order of the Thistle, one of the highest honours in Scotland .

The ceremony at Windsor Castle, which also recognised other luminaries such as ice skaters Christopher Dean and Jayne Torvill, marked a full-circle moment for Elba . He has often credited a grant from The Prince’s Trust (now The King’s Trust) with helping him attend the National Youth Music Theatre as a teenager, a crucial step that changed his life and set him on the path to stardom . Now, decades later, having been honoured by the same monarch who founded that charity, Sir Idris Elba joins a distinguished list of individuals recognized for their exceptional contributions to British society and beyond.
